Users are able to search on all fields using exact phrases entered in inverted commas (e.g. When a user enters "breast cancer" into the search, the database will search for and retrieve the records of all registered trials that include the phrase "breast cancer" in any field. However, if the user enters the text words breast cancer without the inverted commas, records of registered trials with text breast OR cancer in any field will be retrieved). The ACTR Registration Number and/or the Request Number can also be used to search for registered trials.

Advanced Search:

Similar to the 'Basic Search', the 'Advanced Search' allows users to search on all fields on the ANZCTR database. However, it also allows users to narrow their search via the 'Advanced Search Options'. 'Advanced Search Options' allows users to search specific fields on registered trials' records. These specific fields include:

  1. Condition category
  2. Condition code
  3. Intervention code
  4. Minimum age (of participants)
  5. Maximum age (if participants)
  6. Gender (of participants)
  7. Purpose of the study
  8. Allocation to intervention
  9. Date of registration
  10. Countries of recruitment
  11. Primary sponsor type
  12. Funding source(s)
  13. Has the study received approval from at least one ethics committee?

If the user enters a search term and does not select any of the 'Advanced Search Options', the 'Advanced Search' will function like the 'Basic Search'. If the user enters a search term and does select some or all of the 'Advanced Search Options', the search will retrieve the records of all registered trials that contain the search term and meets the criteria set by the completed 'Advanced Search Options' (e.g. If a user enters the search term breast cancer without inverted commas and does not select any of the 'Advanced Search Options', the search will retrieve all records of registered trials containing the text breast OR cancer in any field similar to the 'Basic Search'. If a user enters the search term breast cancer without inverted commas and selects "Treatment: drugs" for Intervention Code and "Randomised controlled trial" for Allocation to Intervention in 'Advanced Search Options', the search would retrieve records of all registered trials that contain the text breast OR cancer in any field as well as having "Treatment: drugs" for the Intervention Code and "Randomised controlled trial" for the Allocation to Intervention).

Search within Results:

Once users have retrieved their search results using the 'Basic Search' or 'Advanced Search', they can further narrow down their search results by choosing 'Search within Results'. The options in 'Search within Results' include:

  1. Recruitment status
  2. Phase
  3. Anticipated or actual start date
  4. Healthy volunteers?
  5. Target sample size

By selecting one, some or all of the option(s) in 'Search within Results', the search will retrieve records of registered trials that meet the criteria set by the selected options (e.g. If a user selects "Open to Recruitment" for the option Recruitment Status, the search will only display records of registered trials that were in the set of retrieved search results and has the Recruitment Status "Open to Recruitment").

Alternate search options:

You may also wish to search for clinical trial information via the World Health Organization (WHO) search portal.

The ANZCTR, along with other international primary registries in the WHO registry network, uploads all registered trial information to this portal on a regular basis, with this external website allowing you to search for trials that are being conducted worldwide.
